History of Gaelic Games in St. Marnock's School

Gaelic Games in St. Marnock’s National School Down Through the Years. 

In 1948 P.J. Ryan, Principal Teacher, entered St. Marnock’s School in the Dublin Primary Schools’ Football League (Cumann na mBunscol) for the first time. Enthusiasm knew no bounds when in the early years St. Marnock’s achieved victories over some of the largest schools in the city, though the school was stretched to the limit to field a team on occasions having only 64 pupils on rolls, 19 of whom were girls and 11 were Infants. P.J. often recalled the excitement generated in 1951 when St. Marnock’s were paired against Donnybrook in the final of the Millar Shield, having disposed of Sandymount, the previous year’s victors, en route to the final. On that occasion we lost by two points.

The 1960’s witnessed great rivalry between the three parish primary schools – Baldoyle Boys, St. Marnock’s and Kinsealy – as they competed annually for the coveted Cannon Field Cup. Portmarnock was only constituted as a parish in its own right in 1972. Our home matches were played in the school pitch. It was not unusual for parents and parishioners, following word-of-mouth pre-match publicity, to assemble to urge on their local heroes. Teams were evenly matched and as a result it was difficult to win this competition in successive years.

It wasn’t until the mid-seventies when the school population increased considerably that the school’s footballers threatened to make the desired break-through by reaching the semi-final stages of competitions. The relaunch of Naomh Mearnóg GAA Club about this time also helped the promotion of Gaelic games in the school as pupils had an opportunity at week-ends to gain additional experience and perfect their skills through participation in inter-club juvenile competitions organised by the North Dublin Board.

In 1981 our school football team reached the final of the Fingal Schools Football League. This marked the beginning of a sequence of sporting successes on the playing field for St. Marnock’s. 1982 was a particularly memorable year for Gaelic Games in our school. In that year our boys’ football team won the Geraldine Cup in the Dublin Primary Schools’ Football League while our junior and senior hurling teams went on to accomplish the double by winning the Harry Conlon and Matt Griffin Cups. The following year our boys’ put in a star performance when collecting the Fingal Schools Football League Cup in an action-packed final.

Throughout the 1970’s and 1980’s internal school football leagues were organized by teachers for children in junior and middle classes. This provided the springboard for further successes in 1991 when St. Marnock’s once again reached the final of the Fingal Football League. With the benefit of experience from the previous year’s campaign our boys’ football team returned to Parnell Park in 1992 to win the Fingal Schools Football League Cup in style.

In more recent years our girls have shown a keen interest in playing Gaelic Games, making history in 1994 by winning a Cumann na mBunscol Camogie Competition in Croke Park, while our girls also broke new ground when in 1998 they returned to Croke Park to win a Cumann na mBunscol Football Competition.

Our success in Primary School Gaelic Games Competitions is a measure of the skill and team-spirit of our pupils, the unfailing support of our parents and the dedication of the following teachers whose commitment to imparting the skills of Gaelic games to pupils since 1948 is highly commendable and greatly appreciated by the school community.

1992  – Fingal Primary Schools League Senior Football Final  

The football season reached its climax at Croke Park when our boys’ football team won the Premier Division of the Fingal Schools League.  As most of the boys had been on the panel for two years this was a just reward for dedication and long term commitment. It was an intriguing tussle which had both sides of vocal supporters in full voice throughout, no more so than in the tit for tat opening 19 minutes, M. Kennedy, K. Healy and G. Farrell pointing for St. Marnock’s tying the game up at 0-4 each. But Portmarnock were still looking the better side all around, Healy and Doherty were both denied goals by the outstretched legs of Cronan’s goalkeeper. Three minutes to half time they were rewarded as K. Healy punched wide of two defenders and the keeper for a fine goal, seconds after P. McConnell, St. Marnock’s captain, had given them the lead once more. Barely 90 seconds had elapsed when the Sword defence was thrown apart again as C. Branigan fired in a magnificent goal. R. Fitzmaurice, A. Lynch, E. Byrne and B. Colreavy continued to have the upperhand in the Portmarnock defence but they were caught out on 10 minutes when Cronan’s clawed back a goal to restore some Brackenstown hope. Disaster struck again as the Swords defence crumbled and C. Doherty crashed home a loose ball from a couple of yards.Then further drama as Portmarnock won a penalty. But the heart fell from Cronan’s eight minutes from time when M. Kennedy beat the keeper for a fourth goal and almost on time he added a point to instant replies from Swords. G. Grant in the Portmarnock goal had little to do overall as his mean defence gave nothing away against what had been regarded as a top notch Swords attack. St. Marnock’s panel – G. Grant, R.  1994 – Cumann na mBunscol Camogie Final  

With six straight wins in their league, the school camogie team reached their final in Croke Park where they defeated St. Fiachra’s, Beaumont in an exciting game and were presented with the Haughey Cup.  This is the school’s first success in a camogie competition and great credit is due to all of the players and their coach on a marvellous achievement. 1995 – Cumann na mBunscol Senior Hurling Final

The school team had a very successful league run.  They qualified for the final of the Johnson Mooney and O’Brien Cup.  With 25 minutes to go we looked home and dry but a late rally by Scoil Maelruain shattered our dream. Naturally we were disappointed with the outcome but we will learn from our experience and we are determined to collect the cup in the near future.   Panel members were: M. Doyle, P. Monaghan, D. 1995 – Cumann na mBunscol Senior Football Final

Well done to all members of our senior team who participated in a very successful campaign in the Corn an nGearaltach Primary Schools’ League Football Competition.  Victories over Skerries, St. David’s and St. Helen’s and defeats by Killester and Brackenstown left us in a play-off situation. A close encounter with St. Helen’s saw us through to the semi-final stage where we came up against Kilbarrack – winners of their section.  With every player putting in a determined effort we eventually came out on top by seven points. Our opponents in the final in Croke Park were Killester who had earlier beaten us in our second league game. With three double decker bus loads of school supporters, mums, dads, relations and friends cheering the team on, it was a great occasion.  We lost by three points and received runners up medals in the Hogan Stand. 1996 – Cumann na mBunscol Senior Hurling Final

Victory in Croke Park crowned the efforts of our senior hurlers in the Marino Cup. They remained undefeated throughout the league and came through their senior final against St. Brigid’s,  Blanchardstown. Their reward was a Croke Park final encounter with Scoil Lorcáin, Palmerstown. We hurled with great heart and spirit, and urged on by their enthusiastic supporters, held on in a tremendously exciting final to win by one point. The following boys formed the panel: D. O’Brien, B. 1996 – Cumann na mBunscol Camogie Final

A Croke Park final victory for our senior girls! Maelruain from Tallaght provided the opposition in the Croke Park final. Our colourful and vocal supporters urged the girls on and with C. Duffy, S. 1996 – Cumann na mBunscol Junior Hurling Final

What a tremendous effort from this young side. A never-say-die spirit saw them come out on top in some close encounters in the league. They came through with 100% record defeating Holy Family, Swords, Oliver Plunkett’s, Malahide,  St. Malachy’s, Edenmore, St. Helen’s and Ballymun. Their semi-final display in Fairview against St. Olaf’s was top class and earned us a well deserved place in the final. Old rivals St. Malachy’s provided the Croke Park opposition.  It was a wonderful final and a fantastic fight back when with time almost up and all seemed lost H. O’Daly slammed in two goals to bring the sides level. A terrific shot by P. Quinn under great pressure hit the upright high up and rebounded wide. Extra time saw Marnock’s take a one point lead. Malachy’s replied with a goal and try as they might no more scores were added. Unfortunately we were just pipped at the post. The junior hurling panel comprised: M. Newman, J.O’Brien, C. Rickard, C. 1997 – Cumann na mBunscol Senior Hurling Final

Our senior hurling team had a great victory over Knocklyon in Croke Park in June winning the Corn Neasáin. This is a premier division competition so it was a terrific result for our first year in this grade. Members of this winning team were: M. Newman, J. O’Brien, P. Kielty, J. Terry, D. Byrne, C. Rickard, B. Minogue, S. Price, H. O’Daly, R. Kennedy, B. Powell, P. Quinn, D. Crowe, J. Rowley, G. Maguire, P. D’Arcy, T. Kelly, C. Bell, J. O’Connor, E. Kelly and A. Barry.

1998 – Fingal Primary Schools League Senior Football Final

During the term the senior football panel participated in the Fingal Schools’ League. Many of these pupils were also involved with the school hurling teams and the junior football team and they demonstrated great commitment which carried them all the way to the final. Along the way they defeated Donaghmede, Malahide, Swords, and Ashbourne . We were up against a strong Rolestown side in an exciting final. Despite fine individual performances we could not match the teamwork of Rolestown on the day. The panel consisted of J. Close, J. Terry, G. Maguire, E. Forde, P. Quinn, J. Rowley, R, Kennedy, K. 1998 – Cumann na mBunscol Junior Hurling Final

Our junior hurlers grew in confidence as the league progressed with victories over St. Malachy’s, Holy Trinity, St. Helen’s, Clontarf, Ballymun, and Raheny. In the semi final we were up against a good Ringsend side. Playing some great hurling St. Marnock‘s won comfortably. It was a welcome return to Croke Park for the final. Ballyroan were hotly fancied for the title but the skills of captain R. Drumgoole backed up by sterling displays from J. O’Brien, D. Leen, D. Donohoe, and  M. Kinsella saw St. Marnock’s take the Fianna Fáil Cup back to Portmarnock. The full panel comprised: M. Rowley, K. Greene, J. O’Brien, B. Burke, M. Kielty, S. Jameson, D. Leen, D. Donohoe, R. 1998 – Fingal Primary Schools League Junior Football Final

Having been defeated in the semi- final of Corn Clonmore in the previous November St. Marnock’s junior football team was eager to make amends in the Fingal League. Victories over Balcurris, Blakestown, St. Theresa’s, Balbriggan, and Gaelscoil na Cille assured St. Marnock’s of a semi- final place against Bellewstown. The long journey to Bellewstown was made very worthwhile by a very hard earned victory. Gaescoil na Cille from  Ashbourne were our opponents in the final which was fixed for Friday 5th June in Parnell Park. 0ver eighty pupils from the school travelled to support their team and the team responded magnificently. Playing into a stiff breeze in the first half St. Marnock’s led at halftime. In the second half St. Marnock’s played with great determination. The backs were very solid and midfield and the forwards worked tirelessly. Two well-taken goals midway through the second half assured St. Marnock’s of a great victory.  1998 – Cumann na mBunscol Girls Football Final

This year our girls felt that they could perform well in the Cumann na mBunscol league. In the end their instincts proved correct. They won their first game against Holy Family, River Valley, after an uncertain start.  Scoil Moibhi, Glasnevin, were our next opponents. They scored the opening goal but then our girls took over. O. O’Daly and C. Murray took control of midfield. The scores came from the accurate boot of S. Neville and O. O’Daly. The backs with A. Greene and L. Redmond prominent held Scoil Moibhi scoreless in the second half.  The trip to Phoenix Park to face Huntstown saw the team play some delightful football. A. Smith brought off some great saves in goal and T. McConnell cleared her lines magnificently. We had won our section and had reached the semi- final. Quarryvale, Clondalkin, put up a brave fight in the semi but after a tense struggle we came out on top. It was into the final and an appearance against Rathcoole in Croke Park. The game ebbed to and fro and it was only in the last five minutes that we got the upper-hand. The girls received a great reception as they proudly showed off their medallions and the Comhar Linn Cup to their class mates the next day. Their hard work and enthusiasm paid off. 1999 – Cumann na mBunscol Senior Hurling Final

While operating in a very competitive premier division this year it was expected that our school team, consisting of last years winning junior team, would acquit themselves well. While losing the opening games the team grew in confidence as the season progressed. Finding their feet at last they began to hurl to their potential, improving with every outing. They outhurled teams who had earlier beaten them. In their semi-final they faced Knocklyon who had already defeated St. Marnock’s by five goals. The prospect of playing a final in Croke Park was motivation enough and the whole team hurled magnificently. The final whistle saw them worthy winners on the day. St. Marnock’s reserved their best for Croke Park final day, and try as they must, Kilmacud could not match our team for sheer spirit and skill. It was a great moment for the team when captain S. Finucane held aloft the Corn Neasáin in front of the enthusiastic school supporters in the Cusack Stand. The senior team consisted of: M. Rowley, B. Bourke, J. O’Brien, K. Greene, M. Kielty, D. 1999 – Cumann na mBunscol Camogie Final

Fulfilling the promise shown in last year’s league campaign, our school’s camogie team claimed victory in Croke Park on 14th May where they overcame Knocklyon in a thrilling final. This was a just reward for the team who trained diligently throughout the year. They had many close encounters along the way with victories over St. Helen’s S.N.S, Bishop Galvin N.S., Loretto, Rathfamham, Scoil Bhride, Knocklyon, and Marino but their ‘never-say-die’ spirit came to their rescue on many occasions. An attention-grabbing cavalcade of victorious team members and supporters made their way around   Portmarnock upon their return where they were acclaimed by friends and neighbours alike. The victorious panel consisted of: C. O’Connor, T. McConnell, H. Milton, L. Redmond, A. Smith, S. Wright, C. O’Malley. O. O’Daly, S. Neville, G. Crookes, C. Hester, A. NicCraith, E. Campion, T. 1999 – Fingal Primary Schools League Girls Football Final

With this exceptional team it is difficult to know where to start. They have broken all records and remained unbeaten in all competitions. They trained in all weathers. They sacrificed school breaks to train.  They even trained over one school holiday period. Their skilful, intelligent play was due to their dedication and enthusiasm on the training ground. Last September they took home the Dublin Primary Schools Premier Division Comhar Linn Cup after a fantastic win in Croke Park over Rathcoole. Now into the Camogie season they mixed both codes successfully and won through to the Fingal League Final in Croke Park. Balrothery, Donabate, Lusk and Mountview were all defeated on their path to the final which proved easy enough as the opposition found their passing, blocking, speed and accuracy too much to handle. Rathoath, Co. Meath,  were worthy opponents in this final and the first half was evenly matched. St. Marnock’s hit top form in the second half and the scores came freely. There was great rejoicing when captain S. Neville received the Fingal Cup and yet another jubliant motorcade completed a lap of honour around Portmarnock housing estates. The panel consisted of: A. 2001 – Cumann na mBunscol Junior Football Final

A colourful party of vocal supporters accompanied our junior football team to Parnell Park on 21st November. Our boys performed well in all their matches in the preliminary stages of the Cumann na mBunscol competition.  We were pitched against Scoil Fhursa, Cromcastle in the final which was staged in Croke Park on 21st November. Having disposed of well balanced teams in the earlier rounds of the competition we had good reason to be confident of lifting the Corn Chlanna Gael Cup in the final. Despite our best efforts and the enthusiastic support of fellow pupils and parents who packed the Cusack Stand we were unable to overcome an excellent Cromcastle side.  On this occasion we had to settle for runner-up medals. 2002  – Fingal Primary Schools League Senior Football Final  

The Fingal League for Primary Schools commenced last March.  St. Marnock’s had victories over Our Lady of Victories, Ballymun, St. Colmcille’s, Swords, St. Theresa’s, Balbriggan and St. Patrick’s, Skerries.  Defeats by Lusk and Scoil an Duinninigh meant that we had to play Lusk in the semi-final. St. Marnock’s played their best football of the year in this game and were worthy winners.  Scoil an Duinninigh were our opponents in the final in Parnell Park on 21st May.  St. Marnock’s got off to a great start in the final and dominated proceedings for  most of the first half. Scoil an Duinninigh scored a goal immediately from the throw-in and gradually began to dominate.  St. Marnock’s put up a very spirited performance but had to give way to a very strong Scoil an Duinninigh team. 2004 – Fingal Primary Schools League Senior Football Final

St. Marnock’s have a long history of participation in the Fingal League with many successes at both junior and senior levels.  Winning the final on 18th May last was particularly pleasing as thirteen years had elapsed since our last senior football success and many in the panel were beaten finalists in Fingal and Cumann na mBunscol Finals over the last three years. The league started in March with a victory over Balscadden but this was followed by a defeat to St. Declan’s, Ashbourne.  A further defeat to Rolestown the following week meant that St. Marnock’s had to win all their remaining matches to qualify for the semi-finals. This they achieved with victories over Skerries and Darndale. The team were now playing with a new self-belief and determination as they faced up to Rolestown in the semi-final. This was a very keenly contested game but St. Marnock’s greater determination saw them through to the final. They now had a re-match with St. Declan’s of Ashbourne in the final in Parnell Park.  All twenty players had made a huge contribution in getting the team to the final. Going into the final as underdogs suited St. Marnock’s. There was a great air of excitement and anticipation on the day of the final. Over a hundred pupils, parents and staff travelled to Parnell Park to support the team. On the pitch the team rose to the occasion and were 1-2 ahead after ten minutes. Then St. Declan’s began to settle into the game. Every ball was keenly contested and scores were difficult to come by. Our backs in particular came under a lot of pressure but they stood firm and held a 4-point advantage at half-time.  St. Marnock’s were first to strike again in the second half, but St. Declan’s didn’t give in and dominated for a period in the second half. But St. Marnock’s determination again came to the fore and picked off some excellent scores to hold on for a famous victory. The cheering and excitement was deafening as captain, J. 2005 – Cumann na mBunscol Junior Football Final

2005 is a very memorable year for St. Marnock’s Junior football team as they bridged a 25 year gap by winning their division in Cumann na mBunscol competition.  Victories over Scoil Neasáin, St. Patrick’s, Drumcondra and Scoil Chiaráin got the team off to the perfect start. Their next game against Balcurris N.S., Ballymun was crucial as they had also gained maximum points in their first three games.  St. Marnock’s found it difficult to cope with a very strong Ballymun side and trailed by 5 points at half time. In the second half our more experienced players began to take control and staged a major comeback to win by four points. Next up was St. Malachy’s, Edenmore, who put up a tough battle but had to give way to a more determined St. Marnock’s team.  Victories over St. Finbarr’s of Cabra and Gaelscoil Cholmcille of Whitehall ensured league victory for St. Marnock’s. There was great jubilation when Mr. Tadhg Kenny, President of Cumann na mBunscol, visited our school to present the team with the League Cup and medals. The panel consisted of: S. O’Reilly, D. 2006 – Cumann na mBunscol Junior Hurling Final

There was great celebrations in St. Marnock’s when against all expectations our Junior Hurlers were victorious in the Cumann na mBunscol ‘Frank Cahill Cup’ in Croke Park.  In a brilliant game of hurling, where every team member played their part, we emerged winners over Scoil Mhuire, Lucan. Urged on by the great support from St. Marnock’s pupils in the stands the team never allowed the opposition to settle and belied the mantle of underdogs.  When the final whistle blew the whole place erupted in the joyful knowledge that the Cup was coming to St. Marnock’s. 2007  – Fingal Primary Schools League Senior Football Final  

After a three year gap St. Marnock’s were back in Parnell Park to contest the Senior Fingal League final against Lusk.  St. Marnock’s came through a very tough semi-final against Realt na Mara of Skerries. Lusk on the other hand had am emphatic win in their semi-final.  It was clear from an early stage of this final that Lusk were a far stronger team and St. Marnock’s found scores very difficult to come by. In the second half the supporters got behind their team and the team responded magnificently.  Our boys gave a good account of themselves but could not match the teamwork and accuracy of Lusk and when the final whistle blew we had to settle for the runners-up position. 2007 – Cumann na mBunscol Camogie Final

The final of Corn Haughey  took place in Parnell Park between St. Marnock’s School and Scoil Mhuire Girls’ National School, Lucan, on Wednesday 23rd May 2007. This is a competition catering for senior camogie primary school teams organised by Cumann na mBunscol. The match was played on a gloriously sunny afternoon and was televised by Setanta Television, which added greatly to the occasion. A huge crowd attended and there was a terrific atmosphere in the stadium. St. Marnock’s were the undefeated champions of the Northside Dublin Schools League and Scoil Mhuire were in the same position from the Southside League, having won all their matches to date. For this reason there was a great air of expectation and tension as both teams took to the pitch. St. Marnock’s were led by their proud captain R. Boyle onto the field and opted to play into the city end of the pitch having won the toss. The match was evenly contested throughout with little between the teams. The skills were breathtaking as both teams played to their optimum, giving their all under the hot summer sun. As in all such occasions when both teams are evenly matched it takes something special to break the deadlock and on this day that bit of magic came from the stick of an amazing player from Lucan named A. Toomey. Lucan’s final tally came to 3-6 and 3-4 came directly from her stick. Despite our girls’ gallant efforts urged on by our vocal supporters we could not overcome this brilliant Scoil Mhuire side and had to content ourselves with runners up medals. 24th May 2010 – Cumann na mBunscol Camogie Final

We had scarcely time to draw our breath or dwell on the disappointment of not winning the hurling final when our girls raced onto the field letting it be known that they were eager to bid for glory.  Like their colleagues on the school senior hurling team they had defeated Gaelscoil Cnoc Liamhna in the Phoenix Park on the previous Tuesday and they had looked forward to playing in Croke Park in the final.  Scoil Maelruain were our opponents from the southside of the city. We knew that their school had an impressive record of getting to Cumann na mBunscol finals. Little was known of their recent form so we weren’t sure what to expect. Our girls and mentors posed for a team photograph in front of the Canal End Stand before resuming the pre-match warm-up. St. Marnock’s defended the Cusack Stand goal and before you could chant “You’ll never beat St. Marnock’s” the sliotar was in play and the game was on. The stand erupted when the white flag was raised at the Hogan Stand goal for a point for St. Marnock’s. This was followed by further points for us. Sara who had played for us in the preceding hurling match played a blinder, popping up everywhere on the pitch. Her determination and long deliveries gave her team mates great heart and they fought earnestly for every ball. Our supporters had much to cheer about as our girls ran out comfortable winners. There was great jubilation in the stand and on the pitch as the team and substitutes lined up in front of their appreciative supporters and families to be presented with Corn Olly Quinlan and winners’ medals. It was a truly memorable day and as we headed for the bus to take us back to Portmarnock we were filled of pride and admiration for the wonderful way our players and supporters had represented themselves and St. Marnock’s School in two back-to-back finals in Croke Park. 24th May 2010 – Cumann na mBunscol Senior Hurling Final

Since defeating Gaelscoil Cnoc Liamhna in the semi-final our hopes were high of achieving hurling success in Croke Park. We learned that Scoil Neasáin would be our opponents in the final on Thursday afternoon 19th May. While having a healthy regard for the opposition we had reason to be confident following an impressive campaign and no injury worries. The team set our for GAA headquarters at 10a.m. on the morning of the game in order to be togged our in good time and to take part in a pre-match puck about in the hallowed ground.  By 11.30a.m. our supporters brandishing flags and chanting “You’ll never beat St. Marnock’s” took up their positions in great numbers on the Cusack stand and bided their time to go pitch-side when seats became available. The sun broke through the overcast sky and lit up the magnificent stadium. A loud cheer and a sea of black and amber flags greeted the players as they emerged from the tunnel.  There were a number of Primary School Hurling and Camogie finals listed for decision that day and our match was to be the second on the programme. With minutes to go to the throw in our panel and mentors assembled in front of the Cusack Stand and posed for a team photograph. Then all eyes were focused on the referee as he summoned the captains of both teams to toss a coin to decide who would play into the Hogan Stand. Faolan took up residence in the Cusack Stand goal for St. Marnock’s and the game was on. We were first to score and we were well in control in the early stages. Faolan’s puck outs were landing within scoring range of Neasáin’s goal and  our centre field dynamic duo were playing well. The game was played at a fast pace. Clean catching, blocking and long clearances were the order of the day. As the game progressed we conceded a goal and gradually Neasain’s chalked up a few scores to go into the lead. With a few minutes to go Cian took a quick free and before Neasain’s defence had time to get organised the ball travelled low and fast to the back of the net. Was there enough time left to make a come back? Unfortunately time ran out and we were defeated by four points in a gripping game played in the searing heat. Naturally our players were disappointed with the outcome but we were proud of and greatly impressed by their performance, commitment and skill. The players were presented with their runner-up medals in front of the Cusack Stand and they prepared to join their fellow pupils in the stand to cheer on our girls in the Camogie Final which was about to start on the same pitch. 20th May 2010 – Fingal Schools League Senior Girls’ Football Final

Our girls faced St. Pauls’ N.S.,  Ayrfield, in the Fingal Senior Girls’ Football Final in Parnell Park on Thursday 20th May. There was great excitement in the school in the days leading up to the game with flags, banners, bunting and posters reminding us all of the great event. A bus arrived to take the supporters to the match and many parents and pupils made their own arrangements to get there. After the team photograph was taken in front of the stand the players took up their positions and the game began. From the outset we knew that we had our work cut out to contain an experienced Ayrfield side that had featured successfully in two other finals in the past year. It also emerged that a number of the opposing team played on a Dublin under age team. Our girls contested every ball but were not allowed to develop a rhythm and convert promising attacks into scores. We had some magnificent individual performances from members of the team and we were all very proud of our girls and their mentors.  October 2011 Cumann na mBunscol Dublin North Junior Boys Football League Winners

On Tuesday 18th October St. Marnock’s Junior Football team won their final league game and were crowned worthy Cumann na mBunscol Junior North league champions. St. Marnock’s last won this league in 2005 and were runners-up on two occasions since then. This year they finished with maximum points having defeated all the other teams in this competition. Victories over Holy Trinity who were league winners last year and Scoil Ui Chonaill were hard earned. St. Marnock’s defeated Scoil Chiaráin away in the first game and then had home victories over St. Benedict’s and St. Mary’s. For the final league game they made the long trip to Grangegorman to play D7 Educate Together N.S.. Cheered on by a large contingent of loyal supporters St. Marnock’s had a comprehensive victory. Afterwards the traditional visit to McDonald’s s was well received and enjoyed by all. The panel would sincerely like to thank all those who supported the team and provided transport to the matches. 8th May 2012 – Cumann na mBunscol (Corn Mhic Phiarais) -Croke Park 

The Final of the Corn Mhic Phiarais (Senior Boys’ Hurling Cup) took place inCrokeParkon Tuesday May 8th at 2.15pm. The teams contesting the final were Scoil Mhuire agus Iosef, Cois Bá and St Marnock’s National School, Portmarnock. All along we said that we would be happy just to reach the final and experience what it would be like to play in Croke Park but once we got there all that was on our minds was to win the trophy and to bring it back to the school’s trophy cabinet. The players left the school for Croke Park at 1pm in a quiet but confident frame-of-mind. Bayside had a reputation for being a determined and skilful team but we knew we could match them and claim the honours for our school. It was a great experience to arrive in Croke Park and experience the tension building up as the throw-in time approached. The team were greeted by the Croke Park officials and were led in to the main dressing room under the Cusack Stand. The players could hear the tremendous noise coming from the crowd up over them in the stands as the announcement was made that we were about to take our place on the pitch. With great pride we ran out on the pitch and tried to stay calm as we soaked up the pre-match atmosphere and did our prearranged warm-up procedures. Soon it was time for the throw-in and the match began in a frenzy of excitement. Within a few minutes our full-forward D. Bolger had stunned Bayside with a quick goal and we matched the Bayside team man-for-man all around the pitch. There was nothing between the teams throughout the first half. The teams matched each other score-for-score and a goal just before half time for Bayside meant that the teams were on level scores at the interval. When the second half began St Marnock’s got another score and soon went one point ahead, but we just could not shake off Bayside. This was a crucial period in the game. Each side was trying to impose their superiority on the opposition, searching for that lucky score to break the deadlock. Unfortunately for us the good luck fell on Bayside’s lap and they got a goal completely against the run of play. Now was the time to hold our nerve and to rally again so that we could save the day for our school. We were were well aware that we were only two points behind with everything still to play for. It was then that the worst happened for us and Bayside got that score which nudged them towards the prize. A second goal came for them in quick succession to the first and it was not a good feeling to find ourselves five points down in such a short space of time. Before we knew it the match was slipping away and we were chasing the game. Bayside drew on reserves of energy which happens to teams when they sense victory and ultimate glory. Despite this our players never gave up and it was heartening to witness the skill, determination and leadership of our most experienced players. Alas the final whistle sounded and we had to observe the whoops of joy from the opposing players as reality dawned on us that our efforts were not good enough on the day. We lined up and were presented with our runners-up medals and then had to observe the victors’ presentation and their acceptance of the cup. Yes we were very disappointed but we were proud as well. There was no shame in finishing second-best after a year’s long campaign which brought us to every corner of the city of Dublin. Our parents and teachers assured us that they were proud of us for all that we had achieved during the season. Mr Keaveny then brought us to McDonald’s for a wonderful meal amongst our loyal supporters and friends, all expenses paid to our delight and happiness! We will never forget our outing to Croke Park on Tuesday May 8th 2012. We are proud of getting to the final and know that 14 teams in our competition would have given anything to have swopped places with Bayside and St Marnock’s  inCrokePark. There’s an old saying that goes “you have to lose one to win one”. Who knows – maybe we’ll have better luck next year!  Fingal Schools Senior Football Winners Division 4 – Parnell Park – 22nd May 2012

The final of the Fingal Schools League ( Senior Boys ) between  St Marnock’s National School and Scoil an Duinnínigh took place in Parnell Park on Tuesday  22nd of May 2012. The match was scheduled for 12.30pm which meant that all the buses and supporters left the school after first break at 11am to get to their seats in the stadium in time for the throw-in after midday.

It had been a long morning for the pupils of St Marnock’s! The supporters arrived in the front yard at 8.30am all dressed up in the black and amber hooped colours of the school. The outside of the school was festooned with flags and bunting and a huge weather-proof banner wishing our players ‘The Best of Luck in the Final!’ was attached to the front wall of the school. 

Displayed at the entrance to the school was a delightful photo-montage of the team, containing interesting pen-pictures and match-positions. Mr Keaveny also distributed black and amber flags assembled by Lorraine  to our supporters so that the players would get a thunderous reception once they entered the stadium. Many pupils and parents had made elaborate banners displaying the school crest and names of favourite players.

The atmosphere was one of nervous anticipation because of what had happened 14 days before. A mere fortnight has passed since our narrow defeat in Croke Park in the senior boys’ hurling final and the school community sensed a quiet determination that we would learn from the experience and go one step further this time and take home the ultimate prize!  Every pupil was aware that a win in the football final in Parnell Park would more than make-up for what had happened in Croke Park and we were quietly confident that things would work out for us this on this occasion.

The Portmarnock supporters  filled our section of the stadium and Parnell Park basked in the heat of the warm summer’s sun as we awaited the entrance of the two teams. The children and adults cheered loudly when the teams warmed up and the team photos were taken. Both sets of supporters rivalled each other with songs and chants as a sporting and good-natured banter filled the stands with a pleasant and positive atmosphere.

The match began in a frenzy of activity. It was obvious that the St Marnock’s boys were driven by the experience which they had gained inCrokeParkas they drove to get a few quick scores on the board.

Ciarán at centre-forward scored a quick goal to start our account but Scoil an Duinninigh had some excellent players and it seemed to make no difference to them. They responded with two points which left the score at 1-0 to 0-2 after 10 minutes play. Then Darren our left-wing forward scored another goal which certainly dented the Feltrim side’s confidence. Our Captain Dara  scored some long-range points and our forwards were working well as a unit. Jason has a few shots saved and then Cormac and Stephen added two more points to our total.

When the half-time whistle sounded the score stood at 2-8 to St Marnock’s and 0-4 to Scoil an Duinínigh.

The second half began with Scoil an Duinínigh on the attack. They were extremely unlucky not to score a goal or two but a mixture of determination from our excellent full-back line of Darragh  and Callum supported by our dependable goalie Steven kept them at bay. On a number of occasions it seemed as if they must score but fortunately for us luck was always on our side.

Then the game settled. The initial assaults of the Feltrim side faded and our lads recovered their composure. Our mid-field duo of Adam  and Dara got into their stride and we began to kick over some beautiful long-range points once again. Conor played great football delivering well-placed passes to send our team on the attack repeatedly. Darren and Cormac pointed from the 40 metre line which stretched the lead even further. Our half-backs, Dylan and Morgan, were chasing everything relentlessly.

Finally the inevitable happened and we got the break we were looking for. After some beautiful interchanges between our forward line Darren  released Cormac who rushed on goal with only the goalie to beat. He did not miss, crashing a beautiful shot to the net, which effectively ended the game as a contest.

The gallant Scoil and Duinnínigh kept battling on tenaciously but there were too many scores to make up. Some of our subs came on at this stage and performed brilliantly, each one of them playing a crucial role in our sweet victory.

We could write forever about this match. At the very end Steven pulled off a wonder-save which drew huge applause from both sets of supporters.

Yes, it was great to bring the cup home. But we will also commend the incredible boys from Scoil an Duinnínigh who were so sporting right to the very end. They contributed to a terrific game of football and the scoreline did not reflect the wonderful talents of the Feltrim school or how well they played on the day. So our supporters returned to the school in great form and the team proceeded to McDonald’s inArtaineCastlefor a meal of their choice- all expenses paid thank you very much!! Afterwards a cavalcade of cars brought the cup and players  on a joyous victory parade around the housing estates of Portmarnock, which is part and parcel of our local GAA traditions.

Congratulations to all the players on St. Marnock’s panel and to their managers, Mr Greene and Mr Scallan, on a magnificent victory. May 22nd 2012 was a special day for our school and will live on in our memory for a long time to come!

 October 2012 Cumann na mBunscol Dublin North Junior Boys Football League Winners

Congratulations to St.Marnock’s Junior Boys’ football team on winning their league which is run by Cumann na mBunscol. This is the second year in a row that St. Marnock’s has won the title. A panel of 22 players were selected from 4th and 5th classes in early September and played their 1st league game at home to St. Benedict’s. St. Marnock’s were trailing by a few points at half time but a much improved performance in the second half saw them to victory. Next up was an away match to Scoil Eoin. This time St. Marnock’s led from the start and won by a considerable margin. Due to inclement weather the next match against St. Malachy’s had to be deferred. Wednesday 2nd October was wet and windy as St. Marnock’s made the long journey to Corduff to play St. Patrick’s. This was one of the defining matches of their league campaign. St. Patrick’s are a very strong and well-drilled team and with less than 10 minutes remaining they were 4 points ahead. St. Marnock’s came storming back and with a late goal followed by an equalising point leaving the sides level at the final whistle. The penultimate game was against Mary, Mother of Good Hope. This was a wonderful game of football with both sides expertly displaying all the skills of the game. St. Marnock’s proved to be the stronger team and ran out worthy winners. Naomh Mearnóg GAA all-weather pitch was the venue for the final league game. From the throw-in St. Marnock’s showed great commitment and dominated the game right up to the final whistle. Whereas St. Malachy’s managed some well-taken scores they were no match for the opposition. The final whistle was greeted with great applause and cheers for the worthy winners.  Senior Girls Football – Corn Irish Rubies

Croke Park – Runners-Up -26th November 2012

Having come through a lengthy campaign we had high hopes of success in the final which was scheduled for the familiar surroundings of Croke Park on the afternoon of Monday 26th November. Our semi-final against an experienced Scoil an Duinnínigh side the previous week provided evidence that we were worthy finalists. Wrapped up in suitable attire to stave off the cold breeze we mounted the steep steps to the Cusack Stand to find the lower deck jammed with supporters cheering on their colleagues in three separate matches. At 2 o’clock the pitch closest to Hill 16 became vacant and our girls in their distinctive black and amber colours began their pre-match warm up. Our flag-waving supporters made their presence felt as they edged closer to the pitch, occupying seats behind the goal. At 2.15p.m. the referee  threw up the ball and it was game on as we defended the Hogan Stand goals. In the opening minutes we looked on nervously as Scoil Oilibhéir chalked up a commanding lead. Gradually our girls gained their composure, marked closely and interrupted the supply lines to the opponents’ forwards. The interval afforded us a welcome opportunity to refocus. In the second half we played into the goals in front of the Cusack stand. For the remainder of the match we camped in our opponents’ half of the pitch but despite our persistent pressure their backs stood firm. Scores were hard to come by. In the third quarter we scored two points while Scoil Oilibhéir could only manage a solitary point. Our relentless pressure was beginning to pay off. At last we got the break we were looking for when Carla latched on to a loose ball which the defence failed to clear and buried the ball in the back of the net. The gap between the teams was further reduced when Aoibheann pointed from a sharp angle. It was nail-biting stuff as we fought our way back to reduce the lead to the narrowest of margins. Alas time ran out and when the final whistle sounded a single point separated the teams. If only! If Only! Naturally we were all disappointed for the team members who had put in a great effort under the inspiring leadership of Claire and Maria.  As Claire led the team to collect their runners-up medals we cheered as if they had won. We felt pound of our team’s commitment and performance. Our supporters headed for the warmth of the bus while our team went for a well-earned celebratory meal. Congratulations to the members of the panel and to their trainers, Ms Phillips and Mr Scallan, and heart-felt thanks to the parents who provided transport, to Paddy Gorey, Naomh Mearnóg GAA Club coach for his encouragement and guidance and to all our loyal supporters who always give a good account of themselves.

Camogie Final in Croke Park

A large contingent of supporters made the journey by bus and car to cheer on our team in the Camogie final in Croke Park on Tuesday 30th April. Black and amber flags and the school banner figured prominently in the Cusack Stand and chants of “You’ll never beat St. Marnock’s” filled the air as our team took to the field.  St. Marnock’s led by one point scored by C. McGown to no score at the end of the first period of play. After the interval we appeared to be heading for victory when out of the blue an opportunist goal scored by Naomh Maolruain following a disputed line ball sealed our fate. Naturally we were disappointed to have to settle for runner-up medals which were presented by Liam O’Neill, President of the GAA. Fingal League Boys Football Final

St. Marnock’s  boys’ senior football team lined out against Gaelscoil Colmcille in a Fingal Primary Schools League final in Parnell Park on Thursday 16th May. We were hopeful of success as many of our players had gathered valuable experience in previous league campaigns. We started well and dominated the early exchanges but we failed to convert all our chances into scores. As the game progressed Gaelscoil Colmcille began to pass with accuracy and pick off points from play. We had excellent performances from S. Mooney, S. Corcoran, C. Ryan and A. Hughes who kept us in the game with well-taken frees. We were defeated by a superior team on the day but were happy that our players had given of their best. Well done to our panel of players – S. Fingal League Girls Football Final

Following the boys’ football final it was the turn of our girls to show their paces as they faced Balscadden N.S. in a Fingal Primary Schools League final. Our girls competed well and impressive play by C. McGowan, M. Kelly, A. Kavanagh, N. McLernon and C. Dempsey left us in a strong position with minutes to go as we only trailed by a goal. Alas the final whistle came too soon and our chance of an equaliser evaporated. We were disappointed to have lost by so narrow a margin but proud to have played in a final and pleased to have given a good account of ourselves. Well done to all the players on the panel – E. 2018 Girls Fingal League football final

On the morning of Tuesday 15th May 2018, the St. Marnock’s Senior girls footballers travelled out to Abbotstown in search of a much needed victory in a Fingal League final. On the way to the final St. Marnock’s girls had beaten St. Cronan’s Swords, Sacred Heart of Jesus, Huntstown and Balrothery NS. In the final they were taking on Gaelscoil na Cille from Ashbourne. The coaches, Ms Phillips, Ms Cullen and Ms Ní Scanaill were busy around the school making last minute preparations that morning. Everyone who met them wished them luck.

All classes from Third to Sixth travelled on three coaches out to Abbotstown to support the girls. It was a balmy 18 degrees with a breeze blowing towards one of the goals. Marnock’s played into this breeze in the first half. The ball rolled quickly and bounced high on the all-weather pitch but the girls adjusted and quickened their pace to match it.

It was clear from the outset that Emma Lynagh was going to have her hands full. She was marking a very tall, athletic player who clearly was GS Na Cille’s star. It was this number 10 that scored most or all of the oppositions scores. Emma acquitted herself well however and had some bruising encounters with this girl to say the least!

Marnock’s moved the ball very well in the first half with notable playmakers being Millie Wilson, Chloe Crilly, Aine Mc Carthy and Ava Sheehy. The team used the wings very well and fed the ball into the full forwards, Alannah Tuite or Lucy Healy. The GS Na Cille full backs were no slouches however and kept these girls scoreless in the first half. All our first half scores came from the half forwards or midfielders, Mille Wilson, Ava Sheehy and Hannah Lynagh. Our backs kept GS na Cille’s relatively quiet in the first half also with most of the scores coming from their number 10. Alison Maddock and Jade Reid defended tenaciously near the goal. The half backs, Ciara Brogan, Shauna Doyle and Naomi McCullough weren’t shy to carry the ball away from the danger zones and to offload it to the midfielders. Both teams matched each other score for score until close to the half time whistle when GS Na Cille went one point ahead.

The match was very much in the balance but Marnock’s had the breeze in the second half which would suit their fast passing and kicking game better. It is no exaggeration to say that Marnock’s came out in the second half with all guns blazing. Millie Wilson led the barrage with a brace of goals and points. She scored 2-3 in all. She was followed close behind by Ava Sheehy with 1-2. Áine McCarthy displayed some deft footwork in midfield to evade their number 10 on numerous occasions. Hannah Lynagh was not so lucky and after bravely tackling this girl came out the worst for wear. The match was stopped for a few minutes while Emma received attention from Miss Ní Scanaill. Thankfully Emma was deemed fit to resume play and the match continued.

Alannah Tuite scored a poachers goal about halfway through the second half and Naomi McCullough got a long range point. We were about 8 points ahead at this stage and it seemed GS na Cille were out of ideas. It was just then that they rallied and their famous number 10 ran half the length of the pitch and rifled the ball past Nicole Buckley, the Marnock’s goalie. Was this girl going to take on Marnock’s on her own?

Not if Nicole Buckley had a say in it! Nicole denied the opposition at least two other goals. She displayed great reflexes and awareness between the sticks. One of the shots was so hard that Nicole could be seen shaking her hands in disbelief that they were still attached to her arms!

Gloria Juchneviciute came on for Shauna Doyle who had run herself ragged in the second half. It was then that the match was there to be won for Marnock’s. They just had to hold out against this barrage from midfield. In one particularly bruising attack, there was a knot of girls around the ball near the Marnock’s goal. Emma Lynagh was seen to emerge from the knot with the ball but she fell to the ground. The referee blew the whistle for a penalty for GS Na Cille. The Marnock’s fans shook their heads in disbelief! Was this one going to slip away from them?

Marnock’s were 5 or 6 points ahead at this stage with about 2 or three minutes left. GS Na Cille’s number 10 blasted the ball from the penalty spot straight over Nicole’s head into the roof of the net. There was nothing she could do, such was the ferocity of the shot. The Marnock’s players did not let their heads sink however. They defended admirably for the remaining couple of minutes and held onto the lead. The final score was St. Marnock’s 5-6 GS Na Cille 5-3.

The Marnock’s fans exploded with relief and celebrated wildly. Tears of relief and joy were seen on the coaches faces as they ran onto the pitch to celebrate with their team. Parents and Naomh Mearnóg mentors were equally jubilant.

1992  – Fingal Primary Schools League Senior Football Final  

The football season reached its climax at Croke Park when our boys’ football team won the Premier Division of the Fingal Schools League.  As most of the boys had been on the panel for two years this was a just reward for dedication and long term commitment. It was an intriguing tussle which had both sides of vocal supporters in full voice throughout, no more so than in the tit for tat opening 19 minutes, M. Kennedy, K. Healy and G. Farrell pointing for St. Marnock’s tying the game up at 0-4 each. But Portmarnock were still looking the better side all around, Healy and Doherty were both denied goals by the outstretched legs of Cronan’s goalkeeper. Three minutes to half time they were rewarded as K. Healy punched wide of two defenders and the keeper for a fine goal, seconds after P. McConnell, St. Marnock’s captain, had given them the lead once more. Barely 90 seconds had elapsed when the Sword defence was thrown apart again as C. Branigan fired in a magnificent goal. R. Fitzmaurice, A. Lynch, E. Byrne and B. Colreavy continued to have the upperhand in the Portmarnock defence but they were caught out on 10 minutes when Cronan’s clawed back a goal to restore some Brackenstown hope. Disaster struck again as the Swords defence crumbled and C. Doherty crashed home a loose ball from a couple of yards.Then further drama as Portmarnock won a penalty. But the heart fell from Cronan’s eight minutes from time when M. Kennedy beat the keeper for a fourth goal and almost on time he added a point to instant replies from Swords. G. Grant in the Portmarnock goal had little to do overall as his mean defence gave nothing away against what had been regarded as a top notch Swords attack. St. Marnock’s panel – G. Grant, R.  1994 – Cumann na mBunscol Camogie Final  

With six straight wins in their league, the school camogie team reached their final in Croke Park where they defeated St. Fiachra’s, Beaumont in an exciting game and were presented with the Haughey Cup.  This is the school’s first success in a camogie competition and great credit is due to all of the players and their coach on a marvellous achievement. 1995 – Cumann na mBunscol Senior Hurling Final

The school team had a very successful league run.  They qualified for the final of the Johnson Mooney and O’Brien Cup.  With 25 minutes to go we looked home and dry but a late rally by Scoil Maelruain shattered our dream. Naturally we were disappointed with the outcome but we will learn from our experience and we are determined to collect the cup in the near future.   Panel members were: M. Doyle, P. Monaghan, D. 1995 – Cumann na mBunscol Senior Football Final

Well done to all members of our senior team who participated in a very successful campaign in the Corn an nGearaltach Primary Schools’ League Football Competition.  Victories over Skerries, St. David’s and St. Helen’s and defeats by Killester and Brackenstown left us in a play-off situation. A close encounter with St. Helen’s saw us through to the semi-final stage where we came up against Kilbarrack – winners of their section.  With every player putting in a determined effort we eventually came out on top by seven points. Our opponents in the final in Croke Park were Killester who had earlier beaten us in our second league game. With three double decker bus loads of school supporters, mums, dads, relations and friends cheering the team on, it was a great occasion.  We lost by three points and received runners up medals in the Hogan Stand. 1996 – Cumann na mBunscol Senior Hurling Final

Victory in Croke Park crowned the efforts of our senior hurlers in the Marino Cup. They remained undefeated throughout the league and came through their senior final against St. Brigid’s,  Blanchardstown. Their reward was a Croke Park final encounter with Scoil Lorcáin, Palmerstown. We hurled with great heart and spirit, and urged on by their enthusiastic supporters, held on in a tremendously exciting final to win by one point. The following boys formed the panel: D. O’Brien, B. A Croke Park final victory for our senior girls! Maelruain from Tallaght provided the opposition in the Croke Park final. Our colourful and vocal supporters urged the girls on and with C. Duffy, S. 1996 – Cumann na mBunscol Junior Hurling Final

What a tremendous effort from this young side. A never-say-die spirit saw them come out on top in some close encounters in the league. They came through with 100% record defeating Holy Family, Swords, Oliver Plunkett’s, Malahide,  St. Malachy’s, Edenmore, St. Helen’s and Ballymun. Their semi-final display in Fairview against St. Olaf’s was top class and earned us a well deserved place in the final. Old rivals St. Malachy’s provided the Croke Park opposition.  It was a wonderful final and a fantastic fight back when with time almost up and all seemed lost H. O’Daly slammed in two goals to bring the sides level. A terrific shot by P. Quinn under great pressure hit the upright high up and rebounded wide. Extra time saw Marnock’s take a one point lead. Malachy’s replied with a goal and try as they might no more scores were added. Unfortunately we were just pipped at the post. The junior hurling panel comprised: M. Newman, J.O’Brien, C. Rickard, C. 1997 – Cumann na mBunscol Senior Hurling Final

Our senior hurling team had a great victory over Knocklyon in Croke Park in June winning the Corn Neasáin. This is a premier division competition so it was a terrific result for our first year in this grade. Members of this winning team were: M. Newman, J. O’Brien, P. Kielty, J. Terry, D. Byrne, C. 1998 – Fingal Primary Schools League Senior Football Final

During the term the senior football panel participated in the Fingal Schools’ League. Many of these pupils were also involved with the school hurling teams and the junior football team and they demonstrated great commitment which carried them all the way to the final. Along the way they defeated Donaghmede, Malahide, Swords, and Ashbourne . We were up against a strong Rolestown side in an exciting final. Despite fine individual performances we could not match the teamwork of Rolestown on the day. The panel consisted of J. Close, J. Terry, G. Maguire, E. Forde, P. Quinn, J. Rowley, R, Kennedy, K. 1998 – Cumann na mBunscol Junior Hurling Final

Our junior hurlers grew in confidence as the league progressed with victories over St. Malachy’s, Holy Trinity, St. Helen’s, Clontarf, Ballymun, and Raheny. In the semi final we were up against a good Ringsend side. Playing some great hurling St. Marnock‘s won comfortably. It was a welcome return to Croke Park for the final. Ballyroan were hotly fancied for the title but the skills of captain R. Drumgoole backed up by sterling displays from J. O’Brien, D. Leen, D. Donohoe, and  M. 1998 – Fingal Primary Schools League Junior Football Final

Having been defeated in the semi- final of Corn Clonmore in the previous November St. Marnock’s junior football team was eager to make amends in the Fingal League. Victories over Balcurris, Blakestown, St. Theresa’s, Balbriggan, and Gaelscoil na Cille assured St. Marnock’s of a semi- final place against Bellewstown. The long journey to Bellewstown was made very worthwhile by a very hard earned victory. Gaescoil na Cille from  Ashbourne were our opponents in the final which was fixed for Friday 5th June in Parnell Park. 0ver eighty pupils from the school travelled to support their team and the team responded magnificently. Playing into a stiff breeze in the first half St. Marnock’s led at halftime. In the second half St. Marnock’s played with great determination. The backs were very solid and midfield and the forwards worked tirelessly. Two well-taken goals midway through the second half assured St. Marnock’s of a great victory.  1998 – Cumann na mBunscol Girls Football Final

This year our girls felt that they could perform well in the Cumann na mBunscol league. In the end their instincts proved correct. They won their first game against Holy Family, River Valley, after an uncertain start.  Scoil Moibhi, Glasnevin, were our next opponents. They scored the opening goal but then our girls took over. O. O’Daly and C. Murray took control of midfield. The scores came from the accurate boot of S. Neville and O. O’Daly. The backs with A. Greene and L. Redmond prominent held Scoil Moibhi scoreless in the second half.  The trip to Phoenix Park to face Huntstown saw the team play some delightful football. A. Smith brought off some great saves in goal and T. McConnell cleared her lines magnificently. We had won our section and had reached the semi- final. Quarryvale, Clondalkin, put up a brave fight in the semi but after a tense struggle we came out on top. It was into the final and an appearance against Rathcoole in Croke Park. The game ebbed to and fro and it was only in the last five minutes that we got the upper-hand. The girls received a great reception as they proudly showed off their medallions and the Comhar Linn Cup to their class mates the next day. Their hard work and enthusiasm paid off. 1999 – Cumann na mBunscol Senior Hurling Final

While operating in a very competitive premier division this year it was expected that our school team, consisting of last years winning junior team, would acquit themselves well. While losing the opening games the team grew in confidence as the season progressed. Finding their feet at last they began to hurl to their potential, improving with every outing. They outhurled teams who had earlier beaten them. In their semi-final they faced Knocklyon who had already defeated St. Marnock’s by five goals. The prospect of playing a final in Croke Park was motivation enough and the whole team hurled magnificently. The final whistle saw them worthy winners on the day. St. Marnock’s reserved their best for Croke Park final day, and try as they must, Kilmacud could not match our team for sheer spirit and skill. It was a great moment for the team when captain S. Finucane held aloft the Corn Neasáin in front of the enthusiastic school supporters in the Cusack Stand. The senior team consisted of: M. Rowley, B. Bourke, J. O’Brien, K. Greene, M. Kielty, D. 1999 – Cumann na mBunscol Camogie Final

Fulfilling the promise shown in last year’s league campaign, our school’s camogie team claimed victory in Croke Park on 14th May where they overcame Knocklyon in a thrilling final. This was a just reward for the team who trained diligently throughout the year. They had many close encounters along the way with victories over St. Helen’s S.N.S, Bishop Galvin N.S., Loretto, Rathfamham, Scoil Bhride, Knocklyon, and Marino but their ‘never-say-die’ spirit came to their rescue on many occasions. An attention-grabbing cavalcade of victorious team members and supporters made their way around   Portmarnock upon their return where they were acclaimed by friends and neighbours alike. 1999 – Fingal Primary Schools League Girls Football Final

With this exceptional team it is difficult to know where to start. They have broken all records and remained unbeaten in all competitions. They trained in all weathers. They sacrificed school breaks to train.  They even trained over one school holiday period. Their skilful, intelligent play was due to their dedication and enthusiasm on the training ground. Last September they took home the Dublin Primary Schools Premier Division Comhar Linn Cup after a fantastic win in Croke Park over Rathcoole. Now into the Camogie season they mixed both codes successfully and won through to the Fingal League Final in Croke Park. Balrothery, Donabate, Lusk and Mountview were all defeated on their path to the final which proved easy enough as the opposition found their passing, blocking, speed and accuracy too much to handle. Rathoath, Co. Meath,  were worthy opponents in this final and the first half was evenly matched. St. Marnock’s hit top form in the second half and the scores came freely. There was great rejoicing when captain S. Neville received the Fingal Cup and yet another jubliant motorcade completed a lap of honour around Portmarnock housing estates. The panel consisted of: A. 2001 – Cumann na mBunscol Junior Football Final

A colourful party of vocal supporters accompanied our junior football team to Parnell Park on 21st November. Our boys performed well in all their matches in the preliminary stages of the Cumann na mBunscol competition.  We were pitched against Scoil Fhursa, Cromcastle in the final which was staged in Croke Park on 21st November. Having disposed of well balanced teams in the earlier rounds of the competition we had good reason to be confident of lifting the Corn Chlanna Gael Cup in the final. Despite our best efforts and the enthusiastic support of fellow pupils and parents who packed the Cusack Stand we were unable to overcome an excellent Cromcastle side.  On this occasion we had to settle for runner-up medals. 2002  – Fingal Primary Schools League Senior Football Final  

The Fingal League for Primary Schools commenced last March.  St. Marnock’s had victories over Our Lady of Victories, Ballymun, St. Colmcille’s, Swords, St. Theresa’s, Balbriggan and St. Patrick’s, Skerries.  Defeats by Lusk and Scoil an Duinninigh meant that we had to play Lusk in the semi-final. St. Marnock’s played their best football of the year in this game and were worthy winners.  Scoil an Duinninigh were our opponents in the final in Parnell Park on 21st May.  St. Marnock’s got off to a great start in the final and dominated proceedings for  most of the first half. Scoil an Duinninigh scored a goal immediately from the throw-in and gradually began to dominate.  St. Marnock’s put up a very spirited performance but had to give way to a very strong Scoil an Duinninigh team. 2004 – Fingal Primary Schools League Senior Football Final

St. Marnock’s have a long history of participation in the Fingal League with many successes at both junior and senior levels.  Winning the final on 18th May last was particularly pleasing as thirteen years had elapsed since our last senior football success and many in the panel were beaten finalists in Fingal and Cumann na mBunscol Finals over the last three years. The league started in March with a victory over Balscadden but this was followed by a defeat to St. Declan’s, Ashbourne.  A further defeat to Rolestown the following week meant that St. Marnock’s had to win all their remaining matches to qualify for the semi-finals. This they achieved with victories over Skerries and Darndale. The team were now playing with a new self-belief and determination as they faced up to Rolestown in the semi-final. This was a very keenly contested game but St. Marnock’s greater determination saw them through to the final. They now had a re-match with St. Declan’s of Ashbourne in the final in Parnell Park.  All twenty players had made a huge contribution in getting the team to the final. Going into the final as underdogs suited St. Marnock’s. There was a great air of excitement and anticipation on the day of the final. Over a hundred pupils, parents and staff travelled to Parnell Park to support the team. On the pitch the team rose to the occasion and were 1-2 ahead after ten minutes. Then St. Declan’s began to settle into the game. Every ball was keenly contested and scores were difficult to come by. Our backs in particular came under a lot of pressure but they stood firm and held a 4-point advantage at half-time.  St. Marnock’s were first to strike again in the second half, but St. Declan’s didn’t give in and dominated for a period in the second half. But St. Marnock’s determination again came to the fore and picked off some excellent scores to hold on for a famous victory. The cheering and excitement was deafening as captain, J. 2005 – Cumann na mBunscol Junior Football Final

2005 is a very memorable year for St. Marnock’s Junior football team as they bridged a 25 year gap by winning their division in Cumann na mBunscol competition.  Victories over Scoil Neasáin, St. Patrick’s, Drumcondra and Scoil Chiaráin got the team off to the perfect start. Their next game against Balcurris N.S., Ballymun was crucial as they had also gained maximum points in their first three games.  St. Marnock’s found it difficult to cope with a very strong Ballymun side and trailed by 5 points at half time. In the second half our more experienced players began to take control and staged a major comeback to win by four points. Next up was St. Malachy’s, Edenmore, who put up a tough battle but had to give way to a more determined St. Marnock’s team.  Victories over St. Finbarr’s of Cabra and Gaelscoil Cholmcille of Whitehall ensured league victory for St. Marnock’s. There was great jubilation when Mr. Tadhg Kenny, President of Cumann na mBunscol, visited our school to present the team with the League Cup and medals. The panel consisted of: S. O’Reilly, D. 2006 – Cumann na mBunscol Junior Hurling Final

There was great celebrations in St. Marnock’s when against all expectations our Junior Hurlers were victorious in the Cumann na mBunscol ‘Frank Cahill Cup’ in Croke Park.  In a brilliant game of hurling, where every team member played their part, we emerged winners over Scoil Mhuire, Lucan. Urged on by the great support from St. Marnock’s pupils in the stands the team never allowed the opposition to settle and belied the mantle of underdogs.  When the final whistle blew the whole place erupted in the joyful knowledge that the Cup was coming to St. Marnock’s. 2007  – Fingal Primary Schools League Senior Football Final  

After a three year gap St. Marnock’s were back in Parnell Park to contest the Senior Fingal League final against Lusk.  St. Marnock’s came through a very tough semi-final against Realt na Mara of Skerries. Lusk on the other hand had am emphatic win in their semi-final.  It was clear from an early stage of this final that Lusk were a far stronger team and St. Marnock’s found scores very difficult to come by. In the second half the supporters got behind their team and the team responded magnificently.  Our boys gave a good account of themselves but could not match the teamwork and accuracy of Lusk and when the final whistle blew we had to settle for the runners-up position. 2007 – Cumann na mBunscol Camogie Final

The final of Corn Haughey  took place in Parnell Park between St. Marnock’s School and Scoil Mhuire Girls’ National School, Lucan, on Wednesday 23rd May 2007. This is a competition catering for senior camogie primary school teams organised by Cumann na mBunscol. The match was played on a gloriously sunny afternoon and was televised by Setanta Television, which added greatly to the occasion. A huge crowd attended and there was a terrific atmosphere in the stadium. St. Marnock’s were the undefeated champions of the Northside Dublin Schools League and Scoil Mhuire were in the same position from the Southside League, having won all their matches to date. For this reason there was a great air of expectation and tension as both teams took to the pitch. St. Marnock’s were led by their proud captain R. Boyle onto the field and opted to play into the city end of the pitch having won the toss. The match was evenly contested throughout with little between the teams. The skills were breathtaking as both teams played to their optimum, giving their all under the hot summer sun. As in all such occasions when both teams are evenly matched it takes something special to break the deadlock and on this day that bit of magic came from the stick of an amazing player from Lucan named A. Toomey. Lucan’s final tally came to 3-6 and 3-4 came directly from her stick. Despite our girls’ gallant efforts urged on by our vocal supporters we could not overcome this brilliant Scoil Mhuire side and had to content ourselves with runners up medals. 24th May 2010 – Cumann na mBunscol Camogie Final

We had scarcely time to draw our breath or dwell on the disappointment of not winning the hurling final when our girls raced onto the field letting it be known that they were eager to bid for glory.  Like their colleagues on the school senior hurling team they had defeated Gaelscoil Cnoc Liamhna in the Phoenix Park on the previous Tuesday and they had looked forward to playing in Croke Park in the final.  Scoil Maelruain were our opponents from the southside of the city. We knew that their school had an impressive record of getting to Cumann na mBunscol finals. Little was known of their recent form so we weren’t sure what to expect. Our girls and mentors posed for a team photograph in front of the Canal End Stand before resuming the pre-match warm-up. St. Marnock’s defended the Cusack Stand goal and before you could chant “You’ll never beat St. Marnock’s” the sliotar was in play and the game was on. The stand erupted when the white flag was raised at the Hogan Stand goal for a point for St. Marnock’s. This was followed by further points for us. Sara who had played for us in the preceding hurling match played a blinder, popping up everywhere on the pitch. Her determination and long deliveries gave her team mates great heart and they fought earnestly for every ball. Our supporters had much to cheer about as our girls ran out comfortable winners. There was great jubilation in the stand and on the pitch as the team and substitutes lined up in front of their appreciative supporters and families to be presented with Corn Olly Quinlan and winners’ medals. It was a truly memorable day and as we headed for the bus to take us back to Portmarnock we were filled of pride and admiration for the wonderful way our players and supporters had represented themselves and St. Marnock’s School in two back-to-back finals in Croke Park. 24th May 2010 – Cumann na mBunscol Senior Hurling Final

Since defeating Gaelscoil Cnoc Liamhna in the semi-final our hopes were high of achieving hurling success in Croke Park. We learned that Scoil Neasáin would be our opponents in the final on Thursday afternoon 19th May. While having a healthy regard for the opposition we had reason to be confident following an impressive campaign and no injury worries. The team set our for GAA headquarters at 10a.m. on the morning of the game in order to be togged our in good time and to take part in a pre-match puck about in the hallowed ground.  By 11.30a.m. our supporters brandishing flags and chanting “You’ll never beat St. Marnock’s” took up their positions in great numbers on the Cusack stand and bided their time to go pitch-side when seats became available. The sun broke through the overcast sky and lit up the magnificent stadium. A loud cheer and a sea of black and amber flags greeted the players as they emerged from the tunnel.  There were a number of Primary School Hurling and Camogie finals listed for decision that day and our match was to be the second on the programme. With minutes to go to the throw in our panel and mentors assembled in front of the Cusack Stand and posed for a team photograph. Then all eyes were focused on the referee as he summoned the captains of both teams to toss a coin to decide who would play into the Hogan Stand. Faolan took up residence in the Cusack Stand goal for St. Marnock’s and the game was on. We were first to score and we were well in control in the early stages. Faolan’s puck outs were landing within scoring range of Neasáin’s goal and  our centre field dynamic duo were playing well. The game was played at a fast pace. Clean catching, blocking and long clearances were the order of the day. As the game progressed we conceded a goal and gradually Neasain’s chalked up a few scores to go into the lead. With a few minutes to go Cian took a quick free and before Neasain’s defence had time to get organised the ball travelled low and fast to the back of the net. Was there enough time left to make a come back? Unfortunately time ran out and we were defeated by four points in a gripping game played in the searing heat. Naturally our players were disappointed with the outcome but we were proud of and greatly impressed by their performance, commitment and skill. The players were presented with their runner-up medals in front of the Cusack Stand and they prepared to join their fellow pupils in the stand to cheer on our girls in the Camogie Final which was about to start on the same pitch. 20th May 2010 – Fingal Schools League Senior Girls’ Football Final

Our girls faced St. Pauls’ N.S.,  Ayrfield, in the Fingal Senior Girls’ Football Final in Parnell Park on Thursday 20th May. There was great excitement in the school in the days leading up to the game with flags, banners, bunting and posters reminding us all of the great event. A bus arrived to take the supporters to the match and many parents and pupils made their own arrangements to get there. After the team photograph was taken in front of the stand the players took up their positions and the game began. From the outset we knew that we had our work cut out to contain an experienced Ayrfield side that had featured successfully in two other finals in the past year. It also emerged that a number of the opposing team played on a Dublin under age team. Our girls contested every ball but were not allowed to develop a rhythm and convert promising attacks into scores. We had some magnificent individual performances from members of the team and we were all very proud of our girls and their mentors.  October 2011 Cumann na mBunscol Dublin North Junior Boys Football League Winners

On Tuesday 18th October St. Marnock’s Junior Football team won their final league game and were crowned worthy Cumann na mBunscol Junior North league champions. St. Marnock’s last won this league in 2005 and were runners-up on two occasions since then. This year they finished with maximum points having defeated all the other teams in this competition. Victories over Holy Trinity who were league winners last year and Scoil Ui Chonaill were hard earned. St. Marnock’s defeated Scoil Chiaráin away in the first game and then had home victories over St. Benedict’s and St. Mary’s. For the final league game they made the long trip to Grangegorman to play D7 Educate Together N.S.. Cheered on by a large contingent of loyal supporters St. Marnock’s had a comprehensive victory. Afterwards the traditional visit to McDonald’s s was well received and enjoyed by all. The panel would sincerely like to thank all those who supported the team and provided transport to the matches. 8th May 2012 – Cumann na mBunscol (Corn Mhic Phiarais) -Croke Park 

The Final of the Corn Mhic Phiarais (Senior Boys’ Hurling Cup) took place inCrokeParkon Tuesday May 8th at 2.15pm. The teams contesting the final were Scoil Mhuire agus Iosef, Cois Bá and St Marnock’s National School, Portmarnock. All along we said that we would be happy just to reach the final and experience what it would be like to play in Croke Park but once we got there all that was on our minds was to win the trophy and to bring it back to the school’s trophy cabinet. The players left the school for Croke Park at 1pm in a quiet but confident frame-of-mind. Bayside had a reputation for being a determined and skilful team but we knew we could match them and claim the honours for our school. It was a great experience to arrive in Croke Park and experience the tension building up as the throw-in time approached. The team were greeted by the Croke Park officials and were led in to the main dressing room under the Cusack Stand. The players could hear the tremendous noise coming from the crowd up over them in the stands as the announcement was made that we were about to take our place on the pitch. With great pride we ran out on the pitch and tried to stay calm as we soaked up the pre-match atmosphere and did our prearranged warm-up procedures. Soon it was time for the throw-in and the match began in a frenzy of excitement. Within a few minutes our full-forward D. Bolger had stunned Bayside with a quick goal and we matched the Bayside team man-for-man all around the pitch. There was nothing between the teams throughout the first half. The teams matched each other score-for-score and a goal just before half time for Bayside meant that the teams were on level scores at the interval. When the second half began St Marnock’s got another score and soon went one point ahead, but we just could not shake off Bayside. This was a crucial period in the game. Each side was trying to impose their superiority on the opposition, searching for that lucky score to break the deadlock. Unfortunately for us the good luck fell on Bayside’s lap and they got a goal completely against the run of play. Now was the time to hold our nerve and to rally again so that we could save the day for our school. We were were well aware that we were only two points behind with everything still to play for. It was then that the worst happened for us and Bayside got that score which nudged them towards the prize. A second goal came for them in quick succession to the first and it was not a good feeling to find ourselves five points down in such a short space of time. Before we knew it the match was slipping away and we were chasing the game. Bayside drew on reserves of energy which happens to teams when they sense victory and ultimate glory. Despite this our players never gave up and it was heartening to witness the skill, determination and leadership of our most experienced players. Alas the final whistle sounded and we had to observe the whoops of joy from the opposing players as reality dawned on us that our efforts were not good enough on the day. We lined up and were presented with our runners-up medals and then had to observe the victors’ presentation and their acceptance of the cup. Yes we were very disappointed but we were proud as well. There was no shame in finishing second-best after a year’s long campaign which brought us to every corner of the city of Dublin. Our parents and teachers assured us that they were proud of us for all that we had achieved during the season. Mr Keaveny then brought us to McDonald’s for a wonderful meal amongst our loyal supporters and friends, all expenses paid to our delight and happiness! We will never forget our outing to Croke Park on Tuesday May 8th 2012. We are proud of getting to the final and know that 14 teams in our competition would have given anything to have swopped places with Bayside and St Marnock’s  inCrokePark. There’s an old saying that goes “you have to lose one to win one”. Who knows – maybe we’ll have better luck next year!  Corn Mhic Phiarais Senior Hurling Runners Up – Croke Park – 8th May 2012

The Final of the Corn Mhic Phiarais took place in Croke Park on Tuesday May 8th at 2.15pm. The teams contesting the final were Scoil Mhuire agus Iosef, Cois Bá and St Marnock’s National School, Portmarnock. All along we said that we would be happy just to reach the final and experience what it would be like to play in Croke Park but once we got there all that was on our minds was to win the trophy and to bring it back to the school’s trophy cabinet. The players left the school for Croke Park at 1pm in a quiet but confident frame-of-mind. Bayside had a reputation for being a determined and skilful team but we knew we could match them and claim the honours for our school. It was a great experience to arrive in Croke Park and experience the tension building up as the throw-in time approached. The team were greeted by the Croke Park officials and were led in to the main dressing room under the Cusack Stand. The players could hear the tremendous noise coming from the crowd up over them in the stands as the announcement was made that we were about to take our place on the pitch. With great pride we ran out on the pitch and tried to stay calm as we soaked up the pre-match atmosphere and did our prearranged warm-up procedures.  Fingal Schools Senior Football Winners Division 4 – Parnell Park – 22nd May 2012

The final of the Fingal Schools League ( Senior Boys ) between  St Marnock’s National School and Scoil an Duinnínigh took place in Parnell Park on Tuesday  22nd of May 2012. The match was scheduled for 12.30pm which meant that all the buses and supporters left the school after first break at 11am to get to their seats in the stadium in time for the throw-in after midday.

It had been a long morning for the pupils of St Marnock’s! The supporters arrived in the front yard at 8.30am all dressed up in the black and amber hooped colours of the school. The outside of the school was festooned with flags and bunting and a huge weather-proof banner wishing our players ‘The Best of Luck in the Final!’ was attached to the front wall of the school. 

Displayed at the entrance to the school was a delightful photo-montage of the team, containing interesting pen-pictures and match-positions. Mr Keaveny also distributed black and amber flags assembled by Lorraine  to our supporters so that the players would get a thunderous reception once they entered the stadium. Many pupils and parents had made elaborate banners displaying the school crest and names of favourite players.

The atmosphere was one of nervous anticipation because of what had happened 14 days before. A mere fortnight has passed since our narrow defeat in Croke Park in the senior boys’ hurling final and the school community sensed a quiet determination that we would learn from the experience and go one step further this time and take home the ultimate prize!  Every pupil was aware that a win in the football final in Parnell Park would more than make-up for what had happened in Croke Park and we were quietly confident that things would work out for us this on this occasion.

The Portmarnock supporters  filled our section of the stadium and Parnell Park basked in the heat of the warm summer’s sun as we awaited the entrance of the two teams. The children and adults cheered loudly when the teams warmed up and the team photos were taken. Both sets of supporters rivalled each other with songs and chants as a sporting and good-natured banter filled the stands with a pleasant and positive atmosphere.

The match began in a frenzy of activity. It was obvious that the St Marnock’s boys were driven by the experience which they had gained inCrokeParkas they drove to get a few quick scores on the board.

Ciarán at centre-forward scored a quick goal to start our account but Scoil an Duinninigh had some excellent players and it seemed to make no difference to them. They responded with two points which left the score at 1-0 to 0-2 after 10 minutes play. Then Darren our left-wing forward scored another goal which certainly dented the Feltrim side’s confidence. Our Captain Dara  scored some long-range points and our forwards were working well as a unit. Jason has a few shots saved and then Cormac and Stephen added two more points to our total.

When the half-time whistle sounded the score stood at 2-8 to St Marnock’s and 0-4 to Scoil an Duinínigh.

The second half began with Scoil an Duinínigh on the attack. They were extremely unlucky not to score a goal or two but a mixture of determination from our excellent full-back line of Darragh  and Callum supported by our dependable goalie Steven kept them at bay. On a number of occasions it seemed as if they must score but fortunately for us luck was always on our side.

Then the game settled. The initial assaults of the Feltrim side faded and our lads recovered their composure. Our mid-field duo of Adam  and Dara got into their stride and we began to kick over some beautiful long-range points once again. Conor played great football delivering well-placed passes to send our team on the attack repeatedly. Darren and Cormac pointed from the 40 metre line which stretched the lead even further. Our half-backs, Dylan and Morgan, were chasing everything relentlessly.

Finally the inevitable happened and we got the break we were looking for. After some beautiful interchanges between our forward line Darren  released Cormac who rushed on goal with only the goalie to beat. He did not miss, crashing a beautiful shot to the net, which effectively ended the game as a contest.

The gallant Scoil and Duinnínigh kept battling on tenaciously but there were too many scores to make up. Some of our subs came on at this stage and performed brilliantly, each one of them playing a crucial role in our sweet victory.

We could write forever about this match. At the very end Steven pulled off a wonder-save which drew huge applause from both sets of supporters.

Yes, it was great to bring the cup home. But we will also commend the incredible boys from Scoil an Duinnínigh who were so sporting right to the very end. They contributed to a terrific game of football and the scoreline did not reflect the wonderful talents of the Feltrim school or how well they played on the day. So our supporters returned to the school in great form and the team proceeded to McDonald’s inArtaineCastlefor a meal of their choice- all expenses paid thank you very much!! Afterwards a cavalcade of cars brought the cup and players  on a joyous victory parade around the housing estates of Portmarnock, which is part and parcel of our local GAA traditions.

Congratulations to all the players on St. Marnock’s panel and to their managers, Mr Greene and Mr Scallan, on a magnificent victory. May 22nd 2012 was a special day for our school and will live on in our memory for a long time to come!

 October 2012 Cumann na mBunscol Dublin North Junior Boys Football League Winners

Congratulations to St.Marnock’s Junior Boys’ football team on winning their league which is run by Cumann na mBunscol. This is the second year in a row that St. Marnock’s has won the title. A panel of 22 players were selected from 4th and 5th classes in early September and played their 1st league game at home to St. Benedict’s. St. Marnock’s were trailing by a few points at half time but a much improved performance in the second half saw them to victory. Next up was an away match to Scoil Eoin. This time St. Marnock’s led from the start and won by a considerable margin. Due to inclement weather the next match against St. Malachy’s had to be deferred. Wednesday 2nd October was wet and windy as St. Marnock’s made the long journey to Corduff to play St. Patrick’s. This was one of the defining matches of their league campaign. St. Patrick’s are a very strong and well-drilled team and with less than 10 minutes remaining they were 4 points ahead. St. Marnock’s came storming back and with a late goal followed by an equalising point leaving the sides level at the final whistle. The penultimate game was against Mary, Mother of Good Hope. This was a wonderful game of football with both sides expertly displaying all the skills of the game. St. Marnock’s proved to be the stronger team and ran out worthy winners. Naomh Mearnóg GAA all-weather pitch was the venue for the final league game. From the throw-in St. Marnock’s showed great commitment and dominated the game right up to the final whistle. Whereas St. Malachy’s managed some well-taken scores they were no match for the opposition. The final whistle was greeted with great applause and cheers for the worthy winners.  Senior Girls Football – Corn Irish Rubies

Croke Park – Runners-Up -26th November 2012

Having come through a lengthy campaign we had high hopes of success in the final which was scheduled for the familiar surroundings of Croke Park on the afternoon of Monday 26th November. Our semi-final against an experienced Scoil an Duinnínigh side the previous week provided evidence that we were worthy finalists. Wrapped up in suitable attire to stave off the cold breeze we mounted the steep steps to the Cusack Stand to find the lower deck jammed with supporters cheering on their colleagues in three separate matches. At 2 o’clock the pitch closest to Hill 16 became vacant and our girls in their distinctive black and amber colours began their pre-match warm up. Our flag-waving supporters made their presence felt as they edged closer to the pitch, occupying seats behind the goal. At 2.15p.m. the referee  threw up the ball and it was game on as we defended the Hogan Stand goals. In the opening minutes we looked on nervously as Scoil Oilibhéir chalked up a commanding lead. Gradually our girls gained their composure, marked closely and interrupted the supply lines to the opponents’ forwards. The interval afforded us a welcome opportunity to refocus. In the second half we played into the goals in front of the Cusack stand. For the remainder of the match we camped in our opponents’ half of the pitch but despite our persistent pressure their backs stood firm. Scores were hard to come by. In the third quarter we scored two points while Scoil Oilibhéir could only manage a solitary point. Our relentless pressure was beginning to pay off. At last we got the break we were looking for when Carla latched on to a loose ball which the defence failed to clear and buried the ball in the back of the net. The gap between the teams was further reduced when Aoibheann pointed from a sharp angle. It was nail-biting stuff as we fought our way back to reduce the lead to the narrowest of margins. Alas time ran out and when the final whistle sounded a single point separated the teams. If only! If Only! Naturally we were all disappointed for the team members who had put in a great effort under the inspiring leadership of Claire and Maria.  As Claire led the team to collect their runners-up medals we cheered as if they had won. We felt pound of our team’s commitment and performance. Our supporters headed for the warmth of the bus while our team went for a well-earned celebratory meal. Congratulations to the members of the panel and to their trainers, Ms Phillips and Mr Scallan, and heart-felt thanks to the parents who provided transport, to Paddy Gorey, Naomh Mearnóg GAA Club coach for his encouragement and guidance and to all our loyal supporters who always give a good account of themselves.

Camogie Final in Croke Park

A large contingent of supporters made the journey by bus and car to cheer on our team in the Camogie final in Croke Park on Tuesday 30th April. Black and amber flags and the school banner figured prominently in the Cusack Stand and chants of “You’ll never beat St. Marnock’s” filled the air as our team took to the field.  St. Marnock’s led by one point scored by C. McGown to no score at the end of the first period of play. After the interval we appeared to be heading for victory when out of the blue an opportunist goal scored by Naomh Maolruain following a disputed line ball sealed our fate. Naturally we were disappointed to have to settle for runner-up medals which were presented by Liam O’Neill, President of the GAA. We will learn from the experience and return to lift the cup on another day. Congratulations to L. Dickinson, C. Courage, E. Daly, C. Dempsey, S. Eccles, A. Kavanagh, H. Collins, C. McGowan, M. Fingal League Boys Football Final

St. Marnock’s  boys’ senior football team lined out against Gaelscoil Colmcille in a Fingal Primary Schools League final in Parnell Park on Thursday 16th May. We were hopeful of success as many of our players had gathered valuable experience in previous league campaigns. We started well and dominated the early exchanges but we failed to convert all our chances into scores. As the game progressed Gaelscoil Colmcille began to pass with accuracy and pick off points from play. We had excellent performances from S. Mooney, S. Corcoran, C. Ryan and A. Hughes who kept us in the game with well-taken frees. We were defeated by a superior team on the day but were happy that our players had given of their best. Well done to our panel of players – S. Fingal League Girls Football Final

Following the boys’ football final it was the turn of our girls to show their paces as they faced Balscadden N.S. in a Fingal Primary Schools League final. Our girls competed well and impressive play by C. McGowan, M. Kelly, A. Kavanagh, N. McLernon and C. Dempsey left us in a strong position with minutes to go as we only trailed by a goal. Alas the final whistle came too soon and our chance of an equaliser evaporated. We were disappointed to have lost by so narrow a margin but proud to have played in a final and pleased to have given a good account of ourselves. Well done to all the players on the panel – E. 2018 Girls Fingal League football final

On the morning of Tuesday 15th May 2018, the St. Marnock’s Senior girls footballers travelled out to Abbotstown in search of a much needed victory in a Fingal League final. On the way to the final St. Marnock’s girls had beaten St. Cronan’s Swords, Sacred Heart of Jesus, Huntstown and Balrothery NS. In the final they were taking on Gaelscoil na Cille from Ashbourne. The coaches, Ms Phillips, Ms Cullen and Ms Ní Scanaill were busy around the school making last minute preparations that morning. Everyone who met them wished them luck.

All classes from Third to Sixth travelled on three coaches out to Abbotstown to support the girls. It was a balmy 18 degrees with a breeze blowing towards one of the goals. Marnock’s played into this breeze in the first half. The ball rolled quickly and bounced high on the all-weather pitch but the girls adjusted and quickened their pace to match it.

It was clear from the outset that Emma Lynagh was going to have her hands full. She was marking a very tall, athletic player who clearly was GS Na Cille’s star. It was this number 10 that scored most or all of the oppositions scores. Emma acquitted herself well however and had some bruising encounters with this girl to say the least!

Marnock’s moved the ball very well in the first half with notable playmakers being Millie Wilson, Chloe Crilly, Aine Mc Carthy and Ava Sheehy. The team used the wings very well and fed the ball into the full forwards, Alannah Tuite or Lucy Healy. The GS Na Cille full backs were no slouches however and kept these girls scoreless in the first half. All our first half scores came from the half forwards or midfielders, Mille Wilson, Ava Sheehy and Hannah Lynagh. Our backs kept GS na Cille’s relatively quiet in the first half also with most of the scores coming from their number 10. Alison Maddock and Jade Reid defended tenaciously near the goal. The half backs, Ciara Brogan, Shauna Doyle and Naomi McCullough weren’t shy to carry the ball away from the danger zones and to offload it to the midfielders. Both teams matched each other score for score until close to the half time whistle when GS Na Cille went one point ahead.

The match was very much in the balance but Marnock’s had the breeze in the second half which would suit their fast passing and kicking game better. It is no exaggeration to say that Marnock’s came out in the second half with all guns blazing. Millie Wilson led the barrage with a brace of goals and points. She scored 2-3 in all. She was followed close behind by Ava Sheehy with 1-2. Áine McCarthy displayed some deft footwork in midfield to evade their number 10 on numerous occasions. Hannah Lynagh was not so lucky and after bravely tackling this girl came out the worst for wear. The match was stopped for a few minutes while Emma received attention from Miss Ní Scanaill. Thankfully Emma was deemed fit to resume play and the match continued.

Alannah Tuite scored a poachers goal about halfway through the second half and Naomi McCullough got a long range point. We were about 8 points ahead at this stage and it seemed GS na Cille were out of ideas. It was just then that they rallied and their famous number 10 ran half the length of the pitch and rifled the ball past Nicole Buckley, the Marnock’s goalie. Was this girl going to take on Marnock’s on her own?

Not if Nicole Buckley had a say in it! Nicole denied the opposition at least two other goals. She displayed great reflexes and awareness between the sticks. One of the shots was so hard that Nicole could be seen shaking her hands in disbelief that they were still attached to her arms!

Gloria Juchneviciute came on for Shauna Doyle who had run herself ragged in the second half. It was then that the match was there to be won for Marnock’s. They just had to hold out against this barrage from midfield. In one particularly bruising attack, there was a knot of girls around the ball near the Marnock’s goal. Emma Lynagh was seen to emerge from the knot with the ball but she fell to the ground. The referee blew the whistle for a penalty for GS Na Cille. The Marnock’s fans shook their heads in disbelief! Was this one going to slip away from them?

Marnock’s were 5 or 6 points ahead at this stage with about 2 or three minutes left. GS Na Cille’s number 10 blasted the ball from the penalty spot straight over Nicole’s head into the roof of the net. There was nothing she could do, such was the ferocity of the shot. The Marnock’s players did not let their heads sink however. They defended admirably for the remaining couple of minutes and held onto the lead. The final score was St. Marnock’s 5-6 GS Na Cille 5-3.

The Marnock’s fans exploded with relief and celebrated wildly. Tears of relief and joy were seen on the coaches faces as they ran onto the pitch to celebrate with their team. Parents and Naomh Mearnóg mentors were equally jubilant.
