6th Class Local History and Geography Trip
Sixth class took part in a local history and Geography trip.
All three classes set off last Friday on a fantastic historical and geographical walk around the local area. They began by walking up towards Lidl where the children learned about the site of the Old Tin Church in Portmarnock. They then moved on down toward the golf club. Before getting to the golf club, the class stopped to discuss the site of the Old mill and the Sluice River. Due to the fantastic weather we had a really clear day and were able to talk about the Sugar Loaf and various other sites we could see around Dublin from the perfect vantage point in Portmarnock.
We moved on from the Old Golf Club down to the beach. Down on the beach the class discussed the Coastal Watch, Howth, Martello Towers and Irelands Eye. We moved on down the beach where we stopped at the Southern Cross monument at the start of Velvet Strand for lunch. The classes heard about the history and meaning of the southern cross.
We moved on then to walk past the Martello tower in Portmarnock and onto High Rock. At High Rock, we discussed about coastal erosion, Lambay Island and the history of St Patrick and Paddys hill.
From there the classes walked back to the hotel to discuss the history of the Jamesons in Portmanrock and take grave rubbings at the site of the Old Portmarnock Church and Graveyard.
All the way around, the children took notes in preparation for poster projects in the following weeks. 26,000 steps later we had plenty of tired children and tired teachers, but thanks to the fantastic weather and being situated in an area with such rich History and Geographical features, the class had a great day.
Below are some pictures from the day.
Thank you from the sixth class teachers.
